Style 77QS, a heavyweight cotton T-shirt with full athletic cut, extra lenght, reinforced shoulders seams and reinforced neck is perhaps Champion’s most recognizable T-shirt. First available in heather gray and plain white, these were mostly issued to athletic teams and worn as practice gear. Often schools marked their shirts with “property of...” or “Athletic Dept” to discourage students from stealing them from the locker rooms. Early 77QS shirts were made of 100% cotton but in 1973 were changed to a 90% cotton / 10% rayon blend and then 88% cotton / 12% rayon about 10 years later. “Locker room gray” and plain white remained the most popular color choices despite additional options such as heather blue, green and red being incorporated in to the product line around 1966.
